Course Description: This course will challenge you to think not just about the different changes people encounter throughout life but also about how they change and why they change. The course views human development along several dimensions (e.g., cognitive, emotional, social, biological), where each of these dimensions contributes to the development of the other dimensions. In addition, the course emphasizes that human development is at once an individual and a social phenomenon—that an individual’s development is part of the development of other individuals as well as the development of the broader culture over history. Such a perspective on development ultimately challenges you to examine your understanding of what an individual human life is, what produces it, what it produces, and how all that relates to your own life.
